Mudroom & Storage Design: Practical Spaces with a Purpose – Mid Canon Hideaway
Nestled in the rugged beauty of Montana’s Missouri River valley region, Mid Canon Hideaway is a private residential addition that embraces everything we love about mountain living—comfort, purpose, and a connection to the landscape. Perched above the Missouri River with expansive views and peaceful surroundings, this project is a reflection of our clients' desire to live simply, beautifully, and in tune with their beautiful countryside.
At Mid Canon Hideaway, functionality is just as important as aesthetics—especially when it comes to the hardworking spaces. For this rural Montana home, we designed a mudroom that does more than greet you at the door—it handles the demands of daily life, weather, pets, and everything in between.

Expanding the Everyday Entry
As part of the addition, we slightly expanded the mudroom footprint to accommodate several key features the clients requested. The result is a space that’s layered with thoughtful design, durable materials, and smart storage zones that support Montana living year-round.

Here’s what we incorporated:
A second French-door refrigerator tucked into its own nook for overflow groceries and entertaining ease
A washer and dryer on pedestals, providing not just ergonomic function but added storage for detergent and household supplies
A tall utility cabinet designed for brooms, vacuums, and cleaning tools
Reuse of the home’s original butcher block countertop, bringing warmth and sustainability into the design
Open shelving with integrated electrical outlets—perfect for charging dog collars and outdoor gear
A drop zone featuring coat hooks, boot storage, and overhead cubbies for hats, gloves, and seasonal gear
Durable LVT flooring with a natural stone look, designed to stand up to boots, pets, and everyday wear
Enhanced lighting with layered fixtures and task lights to brighten early mornings and evening routines
Why It Works in Montana
A mudroom isn’t just a pass-through—it’s a command center. From snowy boots to muddy paws, this space had to be ready for whatever the seasons bring. The layout allows for clear organization without sacrificing the rustic-modern feel that carries through the rest of the home.
By reusing existing materials like the butcher block and adding custom touches like charging outlets and full-height cabinets, we achieved a balance of resourcefulness and refinement.

Designer Note:
Whether you’re building new or updating an existing home, always think about how a space can serve more than one function. In rural areas especially, good storage is never just about hiding things—it’s about making your home work smarter for you.
