Designing for relaxation, entertaining, and Montana views.

Montana summers are fleeting, but they’re also some of the most beautiful days of the year. Long golden evenings, mountain breezes, and the scent of the pine in the air all make us want to spend every possible moment outdoors. Whether it’s your back deck, a shaded porch, or a cozy patio nook, the right outdoor living setup can add serious style and functionality to your home.

Here are our top design tips for creating summer outdoor spaces that are both Montana-durable and beautifully livable.

Make the Most of the View

Montana homes are often blessed with stunning natural backdrops—rolling plains, towering pines, or snow-capped peaks in the distance. Let the landscape do the talking. Arrange your outdoor seating to face the best view, and opt for low-profile furniture that doesn’t block sightlines. If your space is enclosed or shaded, consider adding mirrors or open railings to extend the visual line of the outdoors.

Pro Tip: Built-in benches along the deck edge offer unobstructed views and extra seating for

Choose Weather-Wise Materials

Montana’s climate can be unpredictable with intense summer sun, occasional hail, and dramatic temperature swings. Choose outdoor furniture made from powder-coated metal, teak, polywood, or all-weather wicker. Textiles should be fade-and mildew-resistant (we love Sunbrella or Perennials fabrics for pillows and cushions).

For decks and patios, composite materials like Trex hold up beautifully to Montana’s conditions and reduce long-term maintenance.

Layer in Natural Texture

To keep the design warm and grounded, add organic textures that echo the surrounding landscape. Think:

  • Woven rattan or large metal lanterns

  • Reclaimed wood tabletops

  • Stone planters

  • Wool or jute outdoor rugs

This helps create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection, especially when your interior leans rustic or “Montana-modern”.

Add Soft Lighting for Golden Hour & Beyond

Lighting transforms outdoor spaces after dark. Use solar lanterns, string lights, or downlighting on posts or pergolas to create a soft glow. Flameless LED candles are a low-maintenance way to add ambiance without the worry of open flames.

Want to extend summer nights? Add a tabletop fire bowl or wood-burning chiminea to anchor your seating area.

Don’t Forget Functional Zones

If your space allows, divide your outdoor area into zones for lounging, dining, and gathering:

  • A conversation corner with deep chairs or an L-shaped sectional

  • A dining nook with a sturdy table and benches

  • A flex space (like a built-in bar or portable grill station)

Even a small deck can feel layered and inviting when you vary scale and function throughout.

Go Native with Landscaping

Montana’s short growing season means native plants are your best bet. Add life and color with:

  • Blue grama grass or fescue for texture

  • Lavender and sage for scent and pollinators

  • Planters of harder herbs like thyme and oregano near the grill

Potted arrangements allow you to move greenery where you need it most—especially in rental or temporary setups.

Project Spotlight: Mid Canon Hideaway Deck Reveal

(Optional section if photos/consent from this project are available)

This summer, we wrapped up the outdoor living space at Mid Canon Hideaway—a project where views were everything. With a second story deck, we incorporated steel cable railing, metal posts, and composite decking material for durability and functionality.

We wanted it to feel like you were part of the landscape by not obstructing the amazing Missouri River valley views.

Bring the Indoors Out

Style your outdoor furniture just like your living room: layer textiles, use a tray for your tabletop, and incorporate decor like books, plants, and sculptural pieces. The more it feels like a room, the more time you’ll spend out there.
